Localising Global Indicators

Do you want to measure what your city is already doing with regards to global agendas or how efficient your project is with regard to global goals and targets? Then this tool provides a good starting point. Align global indicators with local circumstances and test which indicators make sense in your city.

Goal

Gaining an initial understanding of selected indicators that are used to measure global goals, and analysing them with respect to the data collected at local level.

Tasks

Step 1:

  • Download the template from the materials section below and think about the overall long-term vision, main strategies, policies, programmes, and/or priorities of your city or district. Then select the most relevant SDGs that are connected to them or to which they may correspond.
  • Continue the analysis by looking at which specific actions or activities exist at the moment to help your city achieve the overall vision. In addition,  do well-defined targets and indicators exist and is reliable data being collected and used?

Step 2:

  • Now you are invited to get to know some of the global indicators in greater deal. Have a look at the prioritised SDGs from Step 1 and select 3 to 10 corresponding targets and indicators that you find most relevant in your context. Check the definition of the indicator. Can it be transferred to the local context?
  • Try to think about possible data sets that would be needed to build the indicator in your national and local context. Note down possible sources of the data (census, administrative data, secondary data, household surveys, etc.), the relevant institutions or stakeholders responsible, the challenges that might arise in regard to collecting the data and possible innovative solutions.

Note

You can also use the SDG self-assessment to prioritise the SDGs and respective indicators or targets. For example, choose those SDGs in which your city’s performance was assessed as basic or critical and have a look at relevant indicators.
